Are Bulova Watches Good?

Nov 09, 2023 | 0 comments by Maison Montres

In the world of horology, few names carry the weight of history and innovation quite like Bulova. With a heritage of over a century, Bulova has consistently been a prominent figure in watchmaking, offering timepieces that blend craftsmanship with innovation. But what exactly makes Bulova watches stand out? Are they truly worth the investment?

In this blog, we'll dive into the facets that define the reputation of Bulova watches and whether they live up to their legacy.

A Glimpse into Bulova's History

Founded in 1875 by Joseph Bulova, the brand has evolved from a small shop in New York City to a global player in the watch industry. Bulova is credited with several "firsts" in watchmaking history, including developing the first full line of men's wristwatches and creating the Accutron, the world's first fully electronic watch. This rich history forms the foundation upon which modern Bulova watches are built.

Precision and Innovation

One of the cornerstones of Bulova's reputation is its dedication to precision and innovation. This commitment was epitomised by Accutron, which introduced a revolutionary tuning fork movement that ensured remarkable accuracy.

Today, Bulova continues this tradition by incorporating cutting-edge technologies, such as the Precisionist movement, known for its exceptional accuracy, and the Curv collection, featuring the world's first curved chronograph movement. These technological advancements demonstrate Bulova's unyielding pursuit of horological excellence.

Craftsmanship and Design

A watch is not merely a timekeeping instrument but a wearable art piece. Bulova embraces this philosophy by crafting watches that showcase meticulous craftsmanship and striking design.

From classic and elegant models to contemporary and sporty pieces, Bulova offers a diverse range to suit various tastes. The attention to detail, use of high-quality materials, and innovative design elements make each Bulova watch a unique expression of style.

Affordable Luxury

Bulova has balanced luxury and accessibility, positioning itself as a brand that offers high-quality timepieces without the exorbitant price tags often associated with luxury watchmakers. A few items are worth more than $1,000, and others are worth as much as $3,000. However, most Bulova watches are priced between $300 and $700.

You might pay three times as much for a different brand and still not get the same accuracy and quality. This affordability factor has contributed to Bulova's popularity, making well-crafted and stylish watches attainable to a broader audience.

Endorsements and Collaborations

A brand's reputation can also be influenced by the company it keeps. Over the years, Bulova has garnered recognition through various endorsements and collaborations. Notably, NASA chose Bulova to be part of the Apollo 11 mission, with a Bulova watch worn by astronaut Dave Scott on the moon's surface. Collaborations with artists, athletes, and celebrities reinforce the brand's cultural relevance.

Customer Reviews and Satisfaction

Customer reviews and feedback are crucial in shaping perceptions in the digital age. A glance at online platforms reveals a largely positive sentiment toward Bulova watches. Customers often highlight these watches' style, value, and reliability blend. Many Bulova clocks have a lengthy lifespan, which attests to their resilience and quality.

A Legacy That Endures

Time, they say, is the true test of quality. Bulova's enduring legacy is a testament to the brand's commitment to producing exceptional timepieces. From the innovative beginnings to the modern-day offerings, Bulova continues to capture the essence of horology while adapting to the ever-evolving tastes of watch enthusiasts.

If you still have the question, "Are Bulova watches good?" We’ll spotlight those well-designed, well-proportioned timepieces to get you thinking.

Top Bulova Watches

Based on style, size, pricing, and history, the following are some of the greatest watches in Bulova's portfolio.

  1. Chronograph Bulova A

The Chronograph A is a touch striking, but not in the sense we've come to anticipate from Bulova. While the firm promotes its diving roots, the Chronograph A boasts a racing-inspired design that looks equally at home on the track as on the waves.

The casing of Chronograph A is just 40.5 millimetres across, which is unusual for a timepiece, especially one from Bulova. It has a stainless steel casing and sapphire crystal and is water resistant to 200 meters. You won't have any problems using it swimming because of its water resistance and the rubber tropic-style strap that comes with it.

  1. Bulova Watch Hack

When it comes to field watches, less is more when discussing them. They're meant to be small, robust, and easy to read. As the name suggests, this field watch hacks, halting the second hand when you pull out the crown - a big benefit for certain collectors. The Hack's only significant flaws are its water resistance and its price.

Field watches require at least 100 meters of water resistance to withstand the perils of the outdoors; the Hack only provides 30. And, for less than $350, field watches like Seiko, Citizen, and Orient will do the job.

  1. Pilot Bulova A-15

Pilot's watches can afford to be large. Some of the community's favourites measure more than 44 millimetres. Bulova overcame the temptation to go overboard with the A-15, resulting in a well-proportioned pilot's watch with fantastic features at an excellent price.

This watch can keep track of three different time zones. The dial's innermost portion is basic Flieger-style, but it features a crown at two o'clock for adjusting an outside bezel and a crown at four o'clock for spinning an inner bezel.

It's remarkable to obtain an automated, hacking, aviation-inspired watch with a sapphire component for around $600.

These are just a few watches that stand out, but there are plenty more.

So, Are Bulova Watches Good?

The resounding answer is yes. Backed by a rich heritage, a dedication to precision and innovation, and a reputation for craftsmanship and affordability, Bulova has rightfully earned its place in the pantheon of respected watchmakers.

However, is there a problem? Well, yes. Most of the company's timepieces are at least 5 millimetres overly big. The vast majority of its timepieces have absurdly low water resistance. Many of their designs are simply ostentatious.

However, if you can look past those flaws, you'll discover a great watch with excellent accuracy that won't break the bank. So, yes, Bulova watches are excellent.
